Call to Action – HB 1967
Practicing physicians of Virginia, please take the time to write and/call your legislators to support HB 1967. This bill promotes physician choice in certification and adding the American Osteopathic Association, National Board of Physicians and Surgeons and the National Board of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. This helps alleviate the monopoly that the American Board of Medical Specialties currently holds on medical continuing certification, also known as maintenance of certification (MOC) in Virginia.
Here’s an updated sample email you can use. The contact information for all legislators is in an excel file you can download below.
Dear Senator or Delegate (last name):
I urge your support for HB 1967 which will promote physician choice in certification by providing competition. Adding the American Osteopathic Association, National Board of Physicians and Surgeons and the National Board of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons will thereby decrease healthcare costs, improve quality, and encourage innovation.
The legislation is of paramount interest to me because I am a practicing physician(feel free to specify your specialty and where you practice, hospital etc.)
I am primarily concerned about our inability to choose our own certification organizations because the current one that is allowed in the state of Virginia, does not sufficiently integrate advances in education and assessment science or offer alternative methods for assessment to improve learning.”(Vision Committee Report page, 3) Recently, the Department of Justice wrote an opinion letter encouraging legislatures to promote competition by recognizing “additional, legitimate certifying bodies” such as the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS), whose recognition the DOJ believes “could allow for a competitive alternative to ABMS in certifying medical specialists.”
Therefore, I will look forward to your reply expressing your opinions, and your current stance on the issue.Thank you for your consideration of my viewpoint on this matter.
